Hook For An Essay

Content hooks for an essay

The first step is always the most difficult, and this universal truth holds true when it comes to essay writing. Securing your reader’s engagement, interest, and attention in those first couple of lines is essential, and determines how they will perceive the rest of the essay.

While you’re staring at a blank screen, it might seem tempting to get those first few words down and really feel like you’ve started, however this might not be the best way to come up with your hook. Instead, write your main points first, clarify your position on the topic and the tone you’ll be using, and then come back and write that killer hook – which will be easier now aware of what your essay actually says.

Some of the most effective hooks are tried and tested, and can be adapted to your tone and content. One of these methods is opening with a question, so your reader will eagerly continue, looking for the answer. Starting with a quote, either from a literary source or a celebrity can capture attention, as can an interesting or unexpected fact or statistic relating to your topic – if they can learn something in that first line, they’ll surely continue hoping to learn more. Setting the scene, or using a personal anecdote loaded with rich description and imagery can be really effective, as readers are known to respond to the visual in their imagination.

If all else fails or none of these options can apply to your essay, stating your thesis in a strong and concise way can also be an amazing hook, especially for an academic essay. Getting to the point lets the reader know what to expect and can’t fail as an opening sentence, as it gives you a point to link back to, ensuring your essay remains consistent.

Be sure that your hook is relevant and appropriate, and you’re on your way to an awesome essay.
